The 2024 art trend was a SLAY. It was all about boldness, vibrancy, individuality, and self-expressionism through art.

So, what art trends did we encounter this year? What art forms made us awestruck?

Oil Painting: Customizable Work And Minimalism

The oil painting has taken a long journey, since the 15th CE during the early Netherlandish period(refers to the historical era of the Dutch Republic, which spanned from 1581 to 1795). It is still a famous artistic medium because of its layering ability, various color options, and ease of use.

Watercolor: Soft Mixture Of Ethereal Beauty

Charming watercolors create a dreamy picture with soft greens, blush tones, peaches, creams, light blondes, and diversity in their paint strokes.

Printmaking: A Carry-Forwarded Art Form

It's a simple process of transferring the image from a matrix(the stamp) to a medium, fabric, or paper.

The history of printmaking began in the Han Dynasty of China. The earliest known example, a woodblock print on silk, dates from 206 B.C. to 220 A.D. One reason for the continued popularity of printmaking in contemporary art is the medium's versatility. Printmaking offers artists the ability to work with a variety of materials and techniques, from traditional etching and lithography to digital printing and screenprinting.

Sustainability And Eco-Art: Conservation Through Creation

A small step towards a better environment is better than nothing. Sustainable art is nothing but the creative practice of creating artwork that is not harmful to the environment. They might use local materials and resources, organic materials where possible, renewable energy sources, and environmentally friendly materials, such as post-consumer paper, wood, upcycling unwanted materials, rice flour & coloring agent natural dyes, etc.

They also may try to use energy-efficient methods for making their work. For example, some artists use recycled material(clay, stone) & biodegradable paint.

Abstract Expressionism: Peace Within Chaos

Abstract Expressionism was a dominant artistic movement in the 1940s and 1950s, and the first to establish New York City as a leader in international modern art. This art form was an arch for everyone to express the art of their own and also freedom for one to express their emotions.

This art form doesn’t consist of any real people or objects, but lines, colors, and shapes.

Types Of Abstract Expressionism

  1. Action Painters

You may have seen reels on Instagram of artists in galleries and museums tossing paint around or turning spilled paint into masterpieces.

So what is “action painting”? Artists who just use spontaneous application of paint with brushes on the canvas and create an expressive stroke. Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline fall under this category of artist. They often use big brushes to make sweeping gestural marks.

Color Field Artist

Mark Rothko, Clyfford Style falls under this second category, which is characterized by artists using large areas of more or less a single flat color.

This art type emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s, it was inspired by European modernism and closely related to abstract expressionism, while many of its notable early proponents were among the pioneering abstract expressionists.

Art In The Current World: When Technology Merges With Art

Even though many people don’t utilize digital art daily, compared to the past, this is a very huge development. AI gained its popularity in 2014, this is because of GAN’s(Generative Adversarial Network: creates new data by modifying an input data sample according to AWS ) introduction to the field of generative AI technologies. Until then it didn’t take its stand in the art field. For example, Google released DeepDream in 2015, which used a convolution neural network as an experimental approach to AI art. Followed by it, Artbreeder, OpenAi, and many more came to use.

Technology development is promising as it brings vast options to our lap, easily accessible, many many options, varied techniques, and approaches. Virtual and augmented reality will open up avenues for immersive experiences. Tools like Procreate, Adobe Photoshop, Photopea, and Corel Painter. As the digital world comes into play, many AI tools have been developed and also incorporated with many software these day. Some of the famous AI tools are Dream Wonder, Open Art, and ArtBreeder.

Advantages Of Art And Technology

FLEXIBILITY: It gives options for us to create, save, and edit even after saving it. We can create multiple documents of it and also share it.

CREATIVITY: As the options have widened, it provided the opportunity for people to make anything happen. I mean a human is capable of achieving anything if there is no restriction. It created a wide platform for people to create more works, unique for themselves too.

DIGITAL WORKS: The paper form changed to digital form, helpful for everyone to adapt to the change through technology.

Textured Art

This art trend was bursting amongst every single artist and non-artist to lay their hands on experimenting with works like this. It is intriguing because mixing solid and liquid components, such as POP or sand with gesso and acrylic paint in to create an art that one can physically feel. It's amazing indeed!!!

This was also brought into the market for beautifully crafted and elegant home decor. The weight between maximalism and minimalism, textured art contributed to both at the same time.

We went from cave painting to trendy digital art forms, this progress has brought many artists to the spotlight. This also came along with changes in traditional ways. Artworks are a powerful medium to express, explore, and document. It's also very important to adapt through the change and move forward as art is never inert, it keeps pushing itself further and changing.

Let's learn more and know more about a sustainable way to do our favorite things, and also educate ourselves about what we like!
